Ipswich’s budding bike riders will be
able to learn the rules of the road
thanks to a new bicycle education
facility now open at the Sutton Park
bike track.
The new bicycle education facility
links with the nearby Brassall Bikeway
and will help teach Ipswich’s young
riders the rules of the road as well
as other safe riding behaviour in a
safe environment.
Construction started in mid-January
and was completed by the end of
the month. The project was designed
to expand the park’s existing facility
and is a safe course for children to
practice riding.
The expansion includes a flat cul-
de-sac area for beginners to learn to
mount and dismount, a T-intersection,
an intersection with signals, a one-way
street, overtaking lane, roundabout,
pedestrian crossing, speed hump and
an off-road track.
Riders can also experience LED traffic
lights that will be set by a timer or
activated by a pedestrian push button.
Council has installed extra pedestrian
footpaths to allow for better
connections between the car park,
playground, bicycle education facility
and picnic areas.
The project’s completion means young
riders now have a safe community bike
facility in Ipswich to learn safe ways
to ride and what different signs and
markings mean.
With the Brassall Bikeway just around
the corner, families can utilise both
facilities to enjoy a fun day of riding
around Ipswich and a healthy, active
lifestyle.
Police bikes

Ipswich’s police officers have been
gifted new bicycles to be used for their
patrols of the region.
The new police bikes were purchased
by Cr Cheryl Bromage in conjunction
with the 24/7 Cycling Safety Fund for
the Karana Downs Police Station which
covers the areas including Brassall,
North Ipswich, Tivoli, Wulkuraka and
several other suburbs.
The new bikes provided by the Yellow
Jersey Bike Shop will be used by police
officers patrolling the regions, which
now have an extensive cycling network
following the completion of the
Brassall Bikeway and new Sutton park
bicycle education facility.
Karana Downs Senior Sergeant Kevin
Harrigan said the new bikes would help
police engage with the community
at a more personal level, particularly
with other riders around the North
Ipswich and Brassall Bikeways and the
new bikes were a valuable addition to
police resources when assisting the
community.
The 24/7 Cycling Safety Fund, which
contributed to the new bikes, is an
organisation driven to promote rider
safety as the transport and exercise
option becomes more popular.
