Nominations are now open for people aged 16 to 25 to join the Ipswich Youth Advisory Council (IYAC), an Ipswich City Council initiative that gives young people an opportunity to make a real impact in their community.
Ten positions are available for those keen to become the ‘official voice’ of the city’s youth, with nominations closing at 11.59pm on Friday, 31 July.
Mayor Teresa Harding said IYAC provides a wonderful opportunity for Ipswich's up and coming leaders to engage with council and provide input into policies and programs.
“IYAC provides a platform for young people to develop their leadership capacity while making a real difference on issues that matter to them,” Mayor Harding said.
“Our city’s young leaders are full of great ideas to shape the future of Ipswich, and this council is excited to engage with them.
“As a parent, I’ve witnessed first-hand the value of IYAC in boosting the confidence and capacity of young people to engage in civic matters, as my daughter participated in IYAC a number of years ago.”
A decade on from his own stint in IYAC, Division 3 Councillor Andrew Fechner also knows how invaluable the experience can be.
“IYAC provided a pivotal opportunity for me to turn my passion for the city of Ipswich into real outcomes," Cr Fechner said.
“I built lasting networks across the city and was empowered to advocate on important issues, while learning more about local government and receiving mentoring.
“It gave me a real taste of leadership and community support in the city, and I encourage anyone who loves our great city and who wants to make a difference, to apply.”
Council is looking for young people living in the Ipswich region who are:
