Keeping the community safe and healthy as markets return

23 July 2020

With the return of popular weekend markets, council is reminding stall-holders and market-goers to practise good hygiene and physical distancing.

Following a break due to COVID-19 shutdowns, Ipswich City Council officers will be back at markets in the coming weeks to conduct their regular food safety inspections.

Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic said it was a good reminder for everyone to think about how they can stop the spread of germs.

"Our community has done a fantastic job at stopping the spread of COVID-19, but good hand hygiene plays a vital role in preventing the spread of all bacteria and viruses," Cr Jonic said.

"Council officers will be out and about at markets and businesses in the weeks and months ahead to remind and educate operators about safe health practices as they carry out their inspections.

"It’s a good reminder of the importance of washing your hands thoroughly before preparing or handling food, and for the community generally to wash hands and use hand sanitiser in public places."

Council’s Environmental Health officers conduct regular food safety inspections of food premises and temporary food stalls in line with the strict hygiene standards that food businesses are legislatively required to meet.
