A working bee has been organised to clean up Bell Street with residents and business owners coming together to revitalise one of Ipswich Central’s busiest streets, and the community is invited to pitch in.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said Ipswich City Council is proud to be able to support Ipswich Central Partnerships Group in their first initiative since they formed in July.
“Ipswich Central Partnerships Group is a volunteer group and in conjunction with council and Clean Up Australia Day, have created an opportunity for the community to come together for a working bee in Bell Street,” Mayor Harding said.
“Council has continued to maintain aspects of Bell Street, including street sweeping, waste services and general cleaning but until long term solutions are found for abandoned State Government infrastructure, we are left with a gateway to Ipswich Central that needs some extra care.”
After a petition calling to ‘Fix Up Bell Street’ the Ipswich Central Partnerships Group decided now was the time to draw attention to the issue in a proactive and positive way.
Ipswich Central Redevelopment Committee Chair Councillor Marnie Doyle said this was an opportunity for the community to contribute to the continued improvement of Ipswich Central.
“Ipswich Central is an important cultural, social, and economic hub for the Ipswich community”, Cr Doyle said.
“Council has invested $250 million into the Nicholas Street Precinct redevelopment to bring people and life back to Ipswich Central.
“Council also established a Façade Improvement Program where Ipswich Central businesses can partner with council to secure dollar-for-dollar funding up to $15,000 for facade improvements.
“I am proud to be part of a community that is prepared to roll up its sleeves, look for solutions and reimagine what we want the first impression of our city to be.”
The working bee on Bell St will be focused on cleaning up the street, removing graffiti, painting to create a fresh canvas to start for future projects and adding greenery.
The working bee is on Sunday, 28 November 2021 at Bell Street between 8am and 11am. Sign up here.
