Ipswich residents have joined with 400,000 Australians putting second-hand items first, as council partners with the Garage Sale Trail to offer events both in-person and online in 2021.
This year’s edition of the nation-wide event, held over the weekends of 13 to 14 and 20 to 21 November, is expected to eclipse the 2020 Garage Sale Trail, which saw almost 28,000 kilograms of items reused locally and over 5,000 residents participate as either sellers, shoppers or online attendees.
Mayor Teresa Harding said the Trail is a fantastic opportunity for residents and ratepayers to get involved in the circular economy.
“Council is committed to increasing our recycling of our city’s waste to 50 per cent by 2025 and this event is one way residents can get involved and help reduce landfill,” Mayor Harding said.
“It is expected Ipswich households will generate more than 175,000 tonnes of waste and recyclable material by 2030.
“Now is a great time to look at our waste habits and ask: ‘what can I recycle, what items can go in the yellow bin, and what items could go to a good home?’”
More than 11,000 people visited xouncil’s microsite in the lead-up to the 2020 Garage Sale Trail, and 84 per cent of participating residents stated they were now more likely to reduce waste.
Households, school community groups, local businesses, whole streets, and other groups can sign up to advertise their sale for free here, with registrations open from 1 September.
