Sixty Ipswich residents are ready to dive into summer after completing free adult swim safety lessons presented by Ipswich City Council in partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society Queensland.
The five-day swim program, part of Ipswich City Council’s SEAL Pool Safety Programs, taught the basics of water safety and took place from 22 to 26 November 2021 at Orion Lagoon, Springfield Central.
Participants were taught how to safely enter and exit a pool, basic swimming strokes, along with floatation and rescue skills.
Community, Culture Arts and Sports Committee Chair Councillor Andrew Fechner said the success of the program proves it is never too late to learn how to swim.
“A part of our iFuture plan, council is committed to encouraging and supporting a safe and inclusive community and these free adult swimming lessons an example of a program making tangible and practical progress towards these goals,” Cr Fechner said.
“With our city home to people from over 163 countries of origin, the program is a great opportunity to promote water safety to community members who may not have had a chance to learn these vital skills earlier in life.
“The success of this program over the past week shows that it’s never too later to learn to swim!”
Division 1 Councillor Sheila Ireland, who was on hand to present participants with certificates of completion, said this year’s adult swim safety program was a huge success.
“It’s really wonderful to see 63 residents turning up to participate in this program,” Cr Ireland said.
“I’m sure all who have completed the course will feel more confident around water this summer.”
