Ipswich road users will experience a smoother, safer ride on South Station Road at Silkstone sooner than expected, with the road reopening on Thursday one month ahead of schedule following extensive road upgrades.
The $2 million upgrade included the replacement of the existing road surface between Rodney and Auld streets along with sections of kerb and channel.
Mayor Teresa Harding said the road upgrades were designed to help meet the Ipswich community’s needs.
"Council continues to build new local roads and upgrade its existing road network to keep pace with Ipswich’s booming population,” Mayor Harding said.
“With more than 1,900 kilometres and counting of council-maintained roads across the city, it is all about ensuring these roads are safe and operational for the Ipswich community.”
Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said the new and improved South Station Road would boost the comfort and safety for local road users.
“These upgrades will help ensure one of our city’s busiest roads can cope with increased traffic as Ipswich continues to grow, and improve the day-to-day journeys for our residents,” Cr Doyle said.
Division 3 Councillor Andrew Fechner thanked the local community for their cooperation while the works were carried out.
“This was an extensive process and we sincerely thank residents and road users for their patience, particularly with the road detours which allowed crews to complete the works ahead of schedule,” Cr Fechner said.
Improvements to South Station Road will continue in late May with night works planned for the road surface north of the Robertson Road roundabout.
Further works to rehabilitate South Station Road to the south of the Robertson Road roundabout to the end of the traffic islands will begin in late June.
