Orion Lagoon will host free swimming lessons and water safety sessions for up to 500 children this week, as council partners with the Royal Life Saving Society Queensland to deliver two pool-based Family Fun Days.
Bookings are now open for children aged between six months and five years to attend the water safety sessions on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 September, at Ipswich.qld.gov.au/seal.
Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chair Councillor Andrew Fechner said the Family Fun Day is an opportunity for Ipswich’s youngest residents to access a free swimming lesson.
“Learning to swim is a crucial skill to keep ourselves and those we love safe in the water,” Cr Fechner said.
“The Family Fun Day is a terrific opportunity to start kids on their lifelong water safety journey.
“On the day, babies and kids up to five years can take part in a free swimming lesson with bookings available here.
“Older children and adults can also enjoy fun games, activities and learn more about CPR and supervision.”
The Family Fun Days come after council announced the winners of its naming competition for the city’s newest aquatic mascot earlier this month.
Two residents won a water safety pack for bringing Swichy the seal to the surface.
Swichy will head up council’s 2021 program of water safety events, including Kids Alive - Do the Five free swimming lessons for children five and under from at the Bundamba Aquatic Centre from 27 to 30 September, and the Royal Life Saving Adult Learn to Swim Lessons at Orion Lagoon from 22 to 26 November.
