The sound of thundering hooves and excited cheers will once again fill Ipswich Turf Club when the Ipswich Cup returns bigger and better than ever this month.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the Ipswich Cup is the showpiece of the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival calendar and part of Ipswich’s Festival of Horsepower.
“Established in 1866, the race is rich in history, heritage and horses and Queensland’s biggest regional race day,” Mayor Harding said.
“It is more than a horse race, it is the social day of the year for the Ipswich region and beyond.”
Mayor Harding said the event attracts more than 20,000 racegoers to the Ipswich Turf Club to enjoy in the day’s entertainment.
“Whether it is the horses you follow, the fashions on the field, the DJ festival or just catching up with friends, the Ipswich Cup is not to be missed,” Mayor Harding said.
Ipswich Deputy Mayor Councillor Jacob Madsen said there would be notable new additions to look forward to this year.
“The Ipswich Cup Barrier Draw will be held at Tulmur Place in the Nicholas Street Precinct for the first time on 14 June from 9.30am to 10.30am,” Cr Madsen said.
“This is where horse racing enthusiasts can come along and listen to racing commentators, owners, trainers and jockeys talking about the upcoming Ipswich Cup.
“You have really got to be there in the flesh to get the most out of the experience.
“On cup day, racegoers will also experience upgrades at Ipswich Turf Club, which now boasts brand new horse race day stalls, a refurbished track, and renovated facilities.”
Ipswich Turf Club CEO Tim Dunn said the Ipswich Cup is renowned for being the social event of the year bringing family and friends together and always brings back former locals to the area.
“This year the TAB Ipswich Cup incorporates not only horse racing but the biggest local DJ Festival on the Infield featuring Mashd N Kutcher,” Mr Dunn said.
“There will be the usual racing activities including the Fashions on the Field and the after-party band playing after the last race in the forecourt which is always a big hit with 80s music playing into the night.”
The Ipswich Cup is on Saturday 18 June 2022 from 10am to 5pm.
