Ipswich children star in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Junior

Some of Ipswich’s brightest young theatre talents will take to the Ipswich Civic Centre stage for four special performances of the family-favourite Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr on 16 and 17 December.
Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner said the production will star 24 performers aged eight to 16 years-old in the beloved magical stage tale.
“Presented by Ipswich Musical Theatre Company Juniors and Ipswich Civic Centre, these shows will shine the spotlight on some very talented and entertaining young local performers,” Cr Fechner said.
“Based on the 1968 film version of Ian Fleming’s children’s book and featuring music by the Sherman Brothers who also scored Mary Poppins, audiences will laugh and be singing along from the very first song.
“There are two late morning matinee shows and early evening performances, and with discounts for groups, families are encouraged to explore and dine in Ipswich Central before or after their show.”
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr is a musical story about an eccentric inventor, Caractacus Potts, who sets about restoring an old race car from a scrap heap with the help of his children Jeremy and Jemima.
They soon discover the car has magical properties including the ability to float and take flight.
Trouble occurs when the evil Baron Bomburst desires the magic car for himself, which sees the family join forces with Truly Scrumptious and batty Grandpa Potts to outwit the dastardly Baron, Baroness and their villainous henchman, the Child Catcher.
Tickets are $19.50 each, $17 each for groups of four or larger, $12.50 each for Vacation Care and School Groups of 15 or larger and can be bought through the Ipswich Civic Centre website.
Councillor Fechner said council has supported the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company by providing more than $4,500 through the Community Events Funding Program to assist with production costs.
“If you are part of a community or sporting group, a grant from this program could help support your next social gathering or add important production value to a show or cultural festival.”
