Thousands of hand-written letters are expected to be mailed between Ipswich and the North Pole as Ipswich Libraries opens its Letters to Santa postal service from 22 November to 14 December.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the letters, part of the Christmas in Ipswich program, are a great free drop-in activity for the whole family at all Ipswich Libraries branches.
“Children, with the help of their parents and carers, can write their letter to Santa and Mrs Claus and post it in one of the big red post boxes at any Ipswich Libraries branch,” Mayor Harding said.
“They can also pick up a letter writing kit to write their letter from home, and then drop it into the North Pole post box on their next visit to an Ipswich Libraries branch.
“The free festive children’s letter kit contains an envelope and sticker to seal their letter to make sure it is for Santa’s eyes only.
“Santa has also gone digital this year with letters now able to be sent using the new online form available on the Ipswich Libraries website, but children will still receive Santa’s reply through the mail.”
Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner said more than 1,000 letters were sent to Santa’s workshop in the North Pole from Ipswich libraries last year.
“Write your very own letter to Santa and post it at any Ipswich Libraries branch, but make sure you do it soon to allow Santa enough time to respond between wrapping presents,” Cr Fechner said.
“Santa and his elves will be doing their best to respond to letters within a week, and letter writers should look out for a special envelope in their home letterbox.”
