New Ipswich Deputy Mayor appointed

Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen has been unanimously voted as Deputy Mayor of Ipswich for the next year.
The appointment was the result of a decision by all councillors two years ago to rotate the Deputy Mayor role every year of the four-year council term.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding congratulated Cr Madsen on his appointment.
“Cr Madsen will bring his passion for Ipswich to the role and I look forward to working with him over the next year,” Mayor Harding said.
“I also want to thank Cr Jonic for her performance in the role over the past year.
“Cr Jonic used her time in the role very well and was able to raise the profile and advocate strongly for residents who were impacted by the 2020 Halloween Hailstorm and more recently the flood.”
Deputy Mayor Cr Madsen said representing the residents of Ipswich is an honour and he is ready to step into the role of Deputy Mayor and fulfil the additional duties to the best of his ability.
“I look forward to working closely with the Mayor, councillors and the community to represent the whole of Ipswich by working collaboratively,” Cr Madsen said.
“Since this council has been together, we have had a one-in-a-hundred-year pandemic, we’ve had a flood and faced a lot of challenges and we have acquired a lot of experience quickly.
“We have stepped up on every occasion as a group and I look forward to the next 12 months and being able to engage constructively about the future rather than reactive to horrible events.
“We are well placed to do that as a group, and I think our best days are still ahead of us.”
Cr Madsen will also continue in his current council role as Governance and Transparency Committee Chairperson, as will Cr Jonic as the Economic and Industry Development Committee Chairperson.
