A haven for skateboards and scooters has been completed in Sutton Park at Brassall.
Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner said it was exciting for Ipswich youth that this modern facility was now completed.
“Council is committed to providing spaces that promote social inclusion, health and wellbeing benefits for our community,” Cr Fechner said.
“This was one of Ipswich’s oldest skate parks and the need for upgrade was identified in council’s Skate and BMX Strategy.”
The Sutton Park Skate Facility Upgrade is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package in association with Ipswich City Council.
Works delivered under this grant also included a new amenities block, seating, shelters, pathway widening and additional Safe City cameras.
The new facility has a total skateable area of 750 sq m, targeted to beginner and intermediate users, with 20 new features including quarter pipe, flat rail, ramps and ledges.
Division 4 Councillor Kate Kunzelmann said the Queensland Government had contributed $1.23 million and council had put $453,000 towards the project.
“This is a significant investment into a community facility. Local young people are encouraged to use the park and take pride and ownership in looking after this quality public area,” Cr Kunzelmann said.
Division 4 Councillor Russell Milligan said community feedback via council’s Shape Your Ipswich portal was incorporated into the design for the skate facility.
“We had valuable feedback at both the concept and detailed design phases to make sure this facility best suited the needs of local families and skatepark users,” Cr Milligan said.
Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden said he was pleased to support council’s funding application for this project that resulted in a State Government grant of $1.23 million.
“The council and the contractors have done a great job and I am sure the residents of Brassall and surrounding suburbs will make good use of the new skate park,” Mr Madden said.
