The Centenary Motorway’s Exit 32 will reopen to motorists from 5am on 11 December 2023.
It was first closed on 21 August to fast-track construction works in a roadwork-heavy section of Springfield, improving safety for workers and saving months of roadworks for the community.
Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Chair Mayor Teresa Harding said the reopening was just in time for the festive season and the New Year holidays.
“We want to thank the community for their continued patience as work continues on the largest road upgrade in Ipswich’s history, the Springfield Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial duplication,” Mayor Harding said.
“Work has been completed quickly and this means easier access for holiday shopping and activities at Orion Springfield Central, Robelle Domain and Orion Lagoon.
“Closing Exit 32 saved months in construction time and millions in overall project cost, fast-tracking its reopening and significantly reducing congestion on the Centenary Motorway.”
Minister for Transport and Main Roads and Minister for Digital Services, Mark Bailey MP, welcomed the project milestone.
“The Queensland Government has invested $6.5 million to deliver the exit ramp and intersection upgrade for the Springfield community and it is pleasing to see this progress,” Mr Bailey said.
“I look forward to the full benefits being rolled out, including better reliability in travel times and enhanced safety for all road users.”
State Member for Jordan Charis Mullen said she was pleased to see Exit 32 opening earlier than expected, which will help motorists through the busy Christmas and school holiday period.
“I recognise that the off-ramp closure has caused inconvenience for many locals who have been forced through a longer detour, but this is a very important project for our community and I am grateful for everyone’s patience during this time,” Ms Mullen said.
Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Deputy Chairperson and Division 2 Councillor Paul Tully said the closure meant significant works had been completed at a quick pace.
“Construction crews were able to work quickly in completing new earthworks, road pavement, drainage, service upgrades and street lighting,” he said.
“This has resulted in more than 70 per cent of the new lanes having asphalt already and more than 30 per cent of pipework installed.”
Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic thanked the community for their patience and understanding.
“Residents and motorists have been excellent with navigating all the changed traffic conditions, but there’s still a little bit more to go,” Cr Jonic said.
“As the off ramp opens, focus will turn to removing the Main Street roundabout and creating the signalised intersection for Stage 3 of the project.”
