Common people of Ipswich, this is your chance to shine.
For the first time since its inception, the world-renowned Common People Dance Project will come to Ipswich this year as part of SPARK Ipswich.
Ipswich City Council Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner said the unique program was a welcomed addition to the SPARK Ipswich program.
“The Common People Dance Project is about being silly, not taking ourselves too seriously and coming together to dance and have a good time,” Cr Fechner said.
“I think Ipswich residents will embrace this given our city’s rich tradition in the arts and participation in eisteddfods and other artistic competitions.
“Ipswich performers at SPARK will go on to represent the city at the Brisbane Festival, so we’re hoping for a good turnout from our residents.”
Common People Dance Project founder Neridah Waters said she hoped to have a team of 30 people from Ipswich.
“This is an all ages and all abilities competition where we welcome anyone to join,” Ms Waters said.
“We’ve had 86-year-olds, to stay-at-home dads who have never danced in their lives, and all trades and professions in between. It’s primarily for adults, but anyone can join.
“The only rules are teams can cheat, bribe the judges and sabotage the other teams. The focus is to have a lot of fun and put humour at the centre of it all.”
Ipswich Common People Dance Project team members will meet weekly on Monday nights, 6.30pm to 7.30pm, from 17 April to 19 June, with the main SPARK Ipswich performance on Sunday 16 July.
