Community to plant trees to honour Ipswich mothers and women

Ipswich is set to get a little greener with the return of the popular Trees for Mum event this Mother’s Day.
On Sunday 14 May, Jim Seymour Park in Camira will be a hive of activity with the community turning out for the annual tree planting event.
Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Russell Milligan said the annual event was a wonderful opportunity to enhance the local environment while also showing appreciation for the women who have shaped us.
“Trees for Mum is part of the council’s strategic Habitat Connection rehabilitation program, which helps restore waterways throughout the region through the planting of native species which in turn will encourage wildlife to flourish,” Cr Milligan said.
“The positive impacts of this event continue long after Mother’s Day as we have seen from previous events where trees planted continue to thrive.”
Division 2 Councillor Paul Tully said he is excited to welcome new and returning tree planters to the park and is hoping their efforts will help support the platypus population at Jim Seymour Park.
“Jim Seymour Park was identified as a perfect site for this event as the Sandy Creek catchment provides important platypus habitat,” Cr Tully said.
“Riparian rehabilitation works such as weed removal and planting native plants are critical measures in improving habitat for platypus and other native wildlife that use our waterway corridors.
“Trees for Mum is a great way for the community to come together, learn about the local flora and fauna found at the park and understand how best to sustain it for future generations while also celebrating Mother’s Day.”
Division 2 Councillor Nicole Jonic said Trees for Mum is great way to spend quality time with the family while enhancing local sustainability.
"This initiative is a beautiful way to honour our mothers and grandmothers, and a great way to get involved in the community. It's a fun and meaningful project that the whole family can participate in,” Cr Jonic said.
“We are expecting more than 200 people and encourage anyone to make the most of the day by having a picnic and celebrating Mother’s Day in our incredible city.”
Every mother or carer registered will receive a complimentary gift and treat to enjoy at the planting.
Plant species are chosen to suit local climate and soil conditions and are propagated and grown in council’s nursery.
