Fernbrooke Oval shines brighter for local sports

Redbank Plains’ sports and recreation activities will shine brighter at Fernbrooke Oval after the installation of new lights around the fields.
Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Chair Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said new LED lights at a cost of around $700,000 are now operational to improve player and spectator safety.
“Ipswich is the fastest growing city in Queensland, so it is critical that our suburban infrastructure and assets keep pace with our growing population,” Mayor Harding said.
“Council is focused on ensuring our city’s facilities support an active lifestyle for Ipswich residents, and I’m so pleased that Fernbrooke Oval is being lit up for safe access and use day and night.”
Growth, Infrastructure and Waste Committee Deputy Chair Councillor Paul Tully said the installation of lights at the oval is part of a $267 million capital works program across the city this financial year.
“Our capital works program reflects our community vision and priorities, helping to create a safe, inclusive and connected community,” Cr Tully said.
“We have hundreds of projects on the go each year right across the city. Large or small, these projects all aim to make a positive difference to what is important to our community, which of course includes sports and recreation for an active lifestyle.”
Division 1 Councillor Sheila Ireland said the recently-completed work included extensive lighting throughout the field, its access, and surrounding area.
“There are four new 40-metre sports field lighting towers, along with seven new car park and seven new path lights,” Cr Ireland said.
“The new lights will allow the facility to safely operate at night, increasing its accessibility for the surrounding community.”
Division 1 Councillor Jacob Madsen said council would continue to invest in facilities for the community.
“New lights aren’t just a physical structure because we know sport brings so much more to our community, creating connections and inclusion across our multicultural city, as well as keeping people
active,” Cr Madsen said.
“Whilst Fernbrooke Oval is home to Swifts Rugby League Football Club, Bundamba Strollers Cricket Club and Brothers United Kilikiti, these lights will also ensure activation by numerous other local sporting groups and associations who are looking for casual use of the facility.”
Swifts Rugby League Football Club Chairman Robbie Carr said the new lights would help the club continue their growth in the Ipswich rugby league community.
“Our club was started in 1919 so we have a long, proud history of rugby league here in Ipswich,” Mr Carr said.
“Making sure we have fit for purpose, quality facilities for our players and spectators is important to us.
“We’re so pleased that Fernbrooke Oval will be lit up for the 2024 season and we can’t wait to start training under the bright lights.
