Real Christmas trees making a real difference

Putting up your Christmas tree can be an act of goodwill this festive season thanks to a partnership between Ipswich City Council and the Ipswich Hospital Foundation.
Ipswich is invited to embrace the ‘real’ spirit of Christmas through purchasing a natural Christmas tree, with all profits going towards hospitals in the Ipswich region.
Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said this initiative is a welcome addition to the Christmas in Ipswich program.
“Council is delighted to support Ipswich Hospital Foundation in this fundraising appeal as part of our popular Christmas in Ipswich program for 2023,” Mayor Harding said.
“Avoiding plastic and sourcing natural and sustainable options for Christmas decorations is becoming increasingly popular as people consider waste and sustainability during the festive season.
“The opportunity to also support hospitals and health centres across our region, including Ipswich Hospital, Ipswich Health Plaza, Goodna Community Health and Ripley Satellite Hospital, which means the switch to a real tree this Christmas is a win-win.
“Ipswich Hospital Foundation funds a variety of supports including medical equipment, health promotion and research, which ultimately means improved access to services for our city.
“I can’t wait to put up my real Christmas tree this year and know that it will also be supporting our community when in need.”
Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner encouraged everyone to get their orders in to avoid disappointment.
“Pre-orders for the Real Christmas Tree Fundraising Appeal will open on Monday 13 November,” Cr Fechner said.
“There are limited numbers of trees this year, so it is important that you get in quick to secure yours before they sell out.
“Various tree sizes will be available for order with collection on Wednesday 13 December 3pm to 7pm as part of the much-loved St Nicholas Precinct light display in Tulmur Place.
“Local Rotary volunteers will be on hand at Tulmur Place to help people collect their orders and celebrate the countdown to Christmas.
“Mark your calendars now for an evening of joy and celebration collecting and setting up your unique and charitable Christmas tree.”
Ipswich Hospital Foundation (IHF) Director of Fundraising and Marketing Claire Hughes said IHF is thrilled to be working with council and the community on this new initiative.
“IHF relies on the generosity of our valued supporters, corporate partners, community groups and individuals who generously raise funds to support healthcare in our region,” Ms Hughes said.
“We are excited to work with council on this wonderful appeal that will ultimately help improve patient care and comfort.
“This Christmas, we are encouraging this incredible community to brighten the future of local patients.
“We hope that those that can, will consider purchasing a real Christmas tree or to simply donate to help make a real difference to the many Ipswich residents and families who walk through our doors each year.”
