There is more to explore in Ipswich’s conservation estates

An expanded trail network across Ipswich’s stunning conservation areas is ready to explore.
Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Deputy Mayor Russell Milligan said sustainable nature-based recreation was growing in popularity across the city’s natural areas.
“Our Enviroplan-funded conservation estates and reserves offer unique experiences to enjoy and appreciate our various ecosystems, native flora and fauna and cultural landscapes,” Deputy Mayor Milligan said.
“Through Enviroplan, council has expanded the trail network, providing more opportunities to explore these valuable natural areas while treading lightly and preserving these places for future generations.
“The cooler months are the perfect time to head out for some nature-based recreation.”
Deputy Mayor Milligan said two new trails have opened to the public at Purga Nature Reserve.
Wirepi trail (pronounced weir-a-pee) is named after a traditional word for ‘come back’, and Ngudur trail (pronounced new-door) is named after the traditional word for ‘tree, tea’ in Yugara/Yagera language.
“The names for these trails acknowledge the highly significant landscape values of Purga Nature Reserve to Traditional Owners, as an area providing an abundance of resources including the Swamp Tea-tree forest which is being protected through Enviroplan,” Deputy Mayor Milligan said.
Deputy Mayor Milligan said new destinations are now available at White Rock – Spring Mountain Conservation Estate that both provide excellent views of the iconic White Rock.
“A formalised track provides access to Gunpit Ridge lookout, named for the site’s military history, and continues onto Western track to form a loop for those wanting to explore further,” Deputy Mayor Milligan said.
“Another great lookout can also be accessed from the Main Ridge track which is now on the estate maps.”
Deputy Mayor Milligan said Flinders-Goolman Conservation Estate was famous for Flinders Peak hike, but also had some new trails on offer, and some lesser-known trails leading to lookouts with spectacular views.
“These trails are not for the faint-hearted but the challenging hike to Mt Blaine lookout provides a 360 degree panorama that is well worth the effort, and Mt Goolman lookout has incredible views of Mt Goolman and mountain ranges beyond,” Deputy Mayor Milligan said.
