Changes to Local Laws proposed for Ipswich Plan 2024

09 August 2024

Consultation is now open for Ipswich residents to have their say on proposed changes to some local laws.

Council recently completed a review to ensure all local laws aligned with the draft new planning scheme, Ipswich Plan 2024, ahead of its expected implementation later this year.

Ipswich City Council Finance and Governance Committee Chairperson Councillor Paul Tully said as Ipswich faces growth and change at a rapid rate, it is important that local laws align with the new planning scheme when it comes into effect.

“Ipswich Plan 2024 is a critically important roadmap for our growing city. The last time the planning scheme was updated was 2006,” Cr Tully said.

“This new planning scheme will help council plan for the next 20 years, as our population is set to more than double from 250,000 to 533,000 by 2046.

“In order for the Ipswich Plan 2024 and council’s local laws to operate, and be implemented consistently and effectively it’s crucial that their wording is consistent.

“As a result, seven out of the 14 local laws require changes, with 18 key changes being identified.

“The proposed changes will mainly be around definitions and renaming zones that will no longer exist in the Ipswich Plan 2024. A guideline will also be transitioned into local laws from the planning scheme.”

Details on all 18 proposed changes, explanatory notes and the draft Ipswich Plan 2024 can be found on council’s Shape Your Ipswich website.

Community consultation will be conducted via Shape Your Ipswich between 9 to 30 August 2024.

Following community consultation and consideration of feedback, the local law-making process will continue with a final report to council later this year.
