Come and play if you want the Toy Library to stay

Ipswich families are invited to test out some of the 2000-plus toys, games, and children’s resources in the Brisbane South Toy Library collection in a special ‘Pop-Up Play’ at Queens Park during the September school holidays.

Ipswich City Council Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Jim Madden said families could drop into the Queens Park Environmental Education Centre between Monday 23 September and Wednesday 25 September to try out the service.

“A toy library is where residents can loan children’s educational toys and play equipment, which is a wonderful way for families to both save money and be more sustainable,” Cr Madden said.

Cr Madden said the Pop-Up Play opportunity was in celebration of Sustainable Ipswich. Sustainable Ipswich is an annual celebration to encourage the community to live sustainably.

“We want to encourage families to show their support – if there is enough demand the Queens Park Environmental Education Centre may become a ‘click and collect’ location for the Brisbane South Toy Library as a way for this great service to continue to be offered to Ipswich residents,” Cr Madden said.

“There is great community support for a toy library to be investigated as part of a future Southern Resource Recovery Centre, but this is a way that Ipswich families could benefit from the service straight away.”

Brisbane South Toy Library Coordinator Robyn Davis said the volunteer organisation was excited to hold the Pop-Up Play at the Queens Park Environmental Education Centre.

“A toy library gives families access to thousands of dollars’ worth of toys and the developmental and educational opportunities that most families can’t afford,” Ms Davis said.

“It’s also about being part of a sustainable, sharing community. A toy library prevents tonnes of plastic going to landfill. It’s also great for places like Ipswich with lots of military families. They won’t need to buy toys or dispose of them when relocating.

“When you come to the Pop-Up Play, feel free to bring donations of pre-loved toys, games and puzzles, so other families can share the love and the fun.”

The Brisbane South Toy Library Pop-Up Play will be at Queens Park Environmental Education Centre from 9am to 2pm on Monday 23 September to Wednesday 25 September 2024. Bookings are not required. More information is at Ipswichcitycouncil.eventbrite.com
