Council has eyes on 2032 but going for gold first with Paris Games

23 July 2024

Eight years from today, the world’s best athletes will be heading Down Under for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games – and potentially producing their best efforts right here in Ipswich.

Sports fans are counting down 2,922 days until the greatest show on earth comes to our shores. But firstly, there are Games to be run and won in Paris and Los Angeles.

The Paris Olympics will be held from 26 July to 11 August 2024 and the Paralympics from 28 August to 8 September 2024. Los Angeles will host the 2028 events.

Brisbane 2032 Board Director and Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the city is getting into the Games spirit early in anticipation of medal-winning performances by green and gold athletes competing in the City of Love.

“I would like to wish the Australian team the best of luck in Paris, but I’d like to give a special shout-out to our very own Ipswich Olympians Mollie O’Callaghan, Ella Ramsay and Teremoana Teremoana,” Mayor Harding said.

“The Games will be here in eight very short years and excitement is already building. Ipswich is slated as an Olympic host venue, with the modern pentathlon set for Brighton Homes Arena at Springfield Central.

“Tulmur Place is a registered Community Viewing Site and will be screening both live action and replays on from 7am to 7pm daily during the Paris Games.”

Economic and Cultural Development Committee Chairperson Councillor Pye Augustine said Ipswich was getting into the Olympics spirit and looked forward to a month of sporting fun.

“Council will also turn the council administration building at 1 Nicholas Street green and yellow,” Cr Augustine said.

“This is a huge moment for Ipswich, Queensland and Australia as we watch our Games stars in action.

“It is amazing to think that some of these athletes – and the young brigade coming through – will be taking part in the 2032 Games before we know it.

“So, council is encouraging everyone to get out, cheer on Australia and bring home the gold.”
