Kids in Booval prepare for a play-packed summer

Families in Booval and surrounding suburbs are in for a play-packed summer as a multi-million dollar upgrade to Cameron Park is completed by Ipswich City Council just in time for school holidays.

A new bespoke playground including an in-ground trampoline, an all-abilities swing and a picnic shelter has been installed in the south-west corner of Cameron Park, at the corner of Glebe Road and Easton Street.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said she was excited for local children to come and enjoy the new playground and facilities.

“The timing is perfect as we kick off the summer school holidays, with children from Booval and surrounding suburbs now able to enjoy Ipswich’s newest playground,” Mayor Harding said.

“When we asked Ipswich residents what they wanted to see in this upgrade, the community was clear that the new playground should be suitable for all ages and abilities. I am delighted that we have been able to achieve a design that is modern, engaging and inclusive for all kids.

“It is also fitting that the design of the playground is inspired in part by the Queenslander houses that surround Cameron Park, inspiring a sense of pride and belonging in our children.”

Minister for Local Government Ann Leahy welcomed completion of the playground.

"Ipswich is one of the state's fastest growing regional centres and it is important to ensure that community infrastructure keeps pace with this growth,” Minister Leahy said.

“I’m delighted we have been able to support Ipswich Council to deliver these green spaces for our community to relax, have a barbecue and enjoy life."

Infrastructure, Planning and Assets Committee Chairperson and Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the new playground would welcome a diverse group of people.

“There is something for everyone at this new playground with a swing and carousel that provide play opportunities for people of all abilities,” Cr Antoniolli said.

“For our older children, there’s the challenging ninja play obstacle course, while younger kids can enjoy the low scrambling blocks as their families sit under the shade of the new picnic shelter.

“The existing amenities block at the playground has also been fully refurbished, along with the existing picnic shelters and barbecues being retained.”

Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said community feedback was incorporated in the design and delivery of the new playground.

“Community feedback included the need for play spaces for all ages and abilities as well as physically challenging climbing and obstacle play, both of which have been implemented,” Cr Doyle said.

“This much-loved park will be even more popular with the locals of Booval, Silkstone and Newtown now that the new playground has been opened.”

The project is proudly funded by the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus program in association with Ipswich City Council.
