Take it or leaf it? Frame the Front Door program launches in Ipswich Central

01 May 2024

A pilot program designed to improve street appeal and create a sense of place by adding greenery outside shopfronts has launched as part of council’s ongoing Ipswich Central revitalisation efforts.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding said the ‘Frame the Front Door’ initiative was the newest placemaking project in the Ipswich Central Revitalisation aiming to deliver environmental, social and economic benefits.

“Business owners in Ipswich Central can apply to have up to two potted plants located outside their store to help create an inviting entrance for shoppers and diners,” Mayor Harding said.

“We know from research that places with good walkability generate 80 per cent more in retail sales as compared to a place with fair walkability.

“This pilot program will operate in two Ipswich Central precincts – Top of Town and Ipswich Centre Core, but if successful we will look to expand it to other areas in the future.

“This latest program aims to build on the success of previous initiatives such as the Green Walkable Streets Artwork Project which saw 11 new pieces of art wrapped on Energex Boxes in Ipswich Central to encourage people to step away from their cars and explore our city on foot.”

Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said making our streets more walkable contributes to people stopping, staying and spending longer in our city centre, generating positive economic returns for our businesses.

“Applications are now open for businesses to apply and close on Monday 13 May. The application process is Small Business Friendly focused and can been completed in under 10 minutes,” Cr Doyle said.

“Once closed, council will assess each location with the Urban Greening and Planning teams to consider viability for access and safety and will provide the potted plants to suitable locations by 1 July.”

Division 3 Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the benefits of the Frame the Front Door program included creating visual interest and drawing customers’ eyes to the entry way of the businesses.

“Our boutique shops already offer unique retail and dining experiences for visitors, but adding greenery through this program is just another way we can contribute to increasing urban greening and creating more enticing and walkable places in our city centre,” Cr Antoniolli said.

“The pilot program is an opportunity for local businesses to join in efforts to increase the amount of greening on our city streets, which in turn encourages more walking.”
