Ipswich City Council is throwing its support behind residents helping to keep the city clean and green this Clean Up Australia Day, coming up on 2 March.
Ipswich City Council Environment and Sustainability Committee Chairperson Councillor Jim Madden said council was proud to again support this community-driven initiative through subsidising entry to one of council’s waste centres.
“Clean Up Australia Day has been making a difference nationwide for 35 years, and each year, we see hundreds of residents come together across up to 60 Ipswich locations to clean up schools, streets, riverbanks and parks,” Cr Madden said.
“It’s a great opportunity for residents of all ages and backgrounds to roll up their sleeves and help protect the natural beauty of our city.
“Litter is not only unsightly, but it creates real damage to our wildlife and the environment, and this is a chance for individuals, families and community groups to make a positive change.
“Council is proud to support this initiative by offering free entry for a nominated vehicle from a registered site to drop off the collected waste at the Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre on 1 and 2 March.”
Councillor Madden said Ipswich is home to stunning natural areas, and it was important to ensure these remain clean for the community to enjoy.
“Every piece of rubbish that is picked up is rubbish that stays out of our waterways and rivers. As a river city, when waste is not properly discarded, it eventually ends up in waterways and flows into beaches and rivers,” Cr Madden said.
“This seemingly small act of picking up rubbish today will have an impact on the future generations of Ipswich residents and it’s up to all of us to make a difference.
“Clean Up Australia Day allows us to reflect on how we can reduce waste in our lives, whether that’s using a reusable water bottle, disposing of e-waste correctly or reducing plastic usage – every small change makes a difference.
“Each of us has a part to play in making Ipswich cleaner and greener, so let’s all get involved and lend a helping hand.”
Clean Up Australia Day will be on Sunday 2 March. Residents and community groups can register a site or join an existing clean-up project, visit cleanup.org.au for more information.
Once a site is registered, email environment@ipswich.qld.au by 24 February to nominate a vehicle for free entry to Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre on 1 to 2 March. Include your drop-off date, car registration details, make and model of the vehicle and the driver’s name.
