Ipswich City Council prioritising red-lidded bin collections for the week

Residents across suburbs of Springfield and surrounds are being asked to put their red-lidded bins out tonight (Wednesday 18 December) and to leave them out over the weekend if not collected.

Ipswich City Council will divert waste collection services to deliver a catch-up service for suburbs whose bins were not collected last week due to protected industrial action.

Council will have collection services in the suburbs of Springfield and surrounds from 5am Thursday 19 December, as well as those suburbs who are normally collected on a Thursday.

Free waste drop-off for affected residents across suburbs impacted by protected industrial action remains available all week.

The Rosewood and Riverview Resource Recovery Centres are open from 7am to 5pm daily.

Council will continue to work to provide critical waste collection services to residents with medical collections.

Council will continue to assess what is possible for service delivery over the remainder of the week and respond to any changes.

Frequency Asked Questions:

1. Does my waste need to be inside my bin when presenting to the Resource Recovery Centre?
No. If your red-lidded bin or green-lidded bin collection was missed and you live in the affected suburbs, you can dispose of up to 80kg of general waste for free at the Riverview or Rosewood Resource Recovery Centres until close of business Monday 23 December 2024. This rubbish does not have to be contained within your actual wheelie bin when you present it to the Recovery Centre, but we recommend double bagging it to ensure safe and hygienic travel.

2. Are visits to the Resource Recovery Centre free? Until when? For who?
Yes – Residents who reside in the suburbs that have been impacted by the waste collection interruptions can dispose of up to 80kg of waste per bin for free at the Riverview or Rosewood Resource Recovery Centres until close of business Monday 23 December 2024. Unfortunately we do not have co-mingled recycling drop off at the Resource Recovery Centres. If you need to bring this material in for disposal it will be treated as general waste. Please bring with you a rates notice or evidence that you reside within those affected suburbs.

3. What is the 80KG limit?
This weight limit is a per bin a guide and is more than the amount of waste a large family would normally generate in a week. The free disposal is to assist those residents who reside in impacted suburbs to cover the waste collections that have been missed.  If you are using the opportunity to bring waste from an additional clean up and wish to bring more to the Resource Recovery centre you can still dump it, but at the normal rates for fees and charges.

4. What can I do if I can't visit the Resource Recovery Centre? Can my neighbour take my waste and what evidence would they need to present to the tip?
Yes, we encourage community supporting each other through this disruption, if you are able to help out a neighbour and bring some of their waste you can present with a copy of your driver’s licence and your neighbour’s address within the affected suburb then you can assist them by dumping their waste for them.

5. Will ICC discount rates for the missed services?
Unfortunately Ipswich City Council is unable to discount rates as a result of this disruption to waste services as a result of protected industrial action. Waste charges are not specific to bin collection, they also contribute to public infrastructure and the public health amenity of the city. Please be assured council is working to balance a reasonable offer to employees while considering the cost-of-living impacts to our residents.

6. I have paid to have my bin emptied as a result of the waste collection disruptions. Will council reimburse me for this expense?
Unfortunately Ipswich City Council is unable to reimburse residents for the costs of personal arrangements with commercial companies, or individuals to remove waste from their properties in response to the disruption to waste services as a result of protected industrial action.

Council provides the following services to assist residents to manage their waste in a manner that protects the environment and community health.
